MIAMI (April 5, 2016) – Miami Children’s Health Foundation hosted a dedication ceremony on April 1 to recognize the generous donation of $1.25 million from the Estate of Gladys M. Stewart toward the Pediatric Care Center on the campus of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.  The patient care center was renamed the Gladys M. & Frederick Stewart Pediatric Care Center to honor Mrs. Stewart’s wish of helping children.

Mrs. Josefina Clary, executor of Mrs. Stewart’s estate, said, “My cousin, Gladys Stewart, never had children of her own but had a deep desire to help disadvantaged children receive medical care. Through this gift from her estate, she will be providing comprehensive care to deserving children at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. I know that she would feel great satisfaction in seeing her wish fulfilled.”

In addition to Mrs. Clary, her husband, son and daughters, several other members the Clary family were in attendance. They were welcomed by Dr. Narendra Kini, President & CEO of Miami Children’s Health System, and then had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Amanda Porro, attending physician at the center about how Mrs. Stewart’s generosity is impacting the lives of patients of the Gladys M. & Frederick Stewart Pediatric Care Center. Julie Habib, a parent, expressed her deep gratitude for the care her son received at the Pediatric Care Center. Nancy Humbert, Executive Vice President, Ambulatory Services & External Affiliations for Miami Children’s Health System and Lucy Morillo, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Health Foundation, were present and shared the foundation’s sincere appreciation for Mrs. Stewart’s act of philanthropy. Miami Children’s Health System’s president of Physician Enterprise, Pediatric Specialists of America, Dr. Leonard G. Feld, was also on hand for the dedication, as were clinical and administrative staff of the Pediatric Care Center.

“Miami Children’s Health Foundation is so grateful to Mrs. Stewart. Her caring heart and commitment to children has established a legacy that will live on. We are excited to officially dedicate this important pediatric care center within Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. As a medical home to our Medicaid population and children who are chronically ill and need complex care, the Gladys M. & Frederick Stewart Pediatric Care Center is realizing Mrs. Stewart’s desire to help children most in need” ” said Lucy Morillo, President and CEO of Miami Children’s Health Foundation.

The Gladys M. & Frederick Stewart Pediatric Care Center offers the finest in pediatric primary care with five board-certified physicians, who work in collaboration with pediatric residents and nurses with special training and experience providing comprehensive pediatric medical care for children from infancy to 21 years of age.

Gladys Stewart was born in Cuba and migrated to the United States in 1948. After her husband Frederick passed away, she became interested in giving back and supporting the children of our community, particularly those less fortunate. In a visit to what was then Miami Children’s Hospital, she was moved by the compassionate care given to underserved children in need of medical help. Mrs. Stewart, who made several modest gifts during her lifetime to the cause, lived her life by her principals and in her will left a bequest of $1.25 million to help needy children at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Her generosity will impact the lives of children and families for years to come.
