Support Music Therapy at Nicklaus Children's Hospital

For a child, the hospital can be a strange and scary place filled with unfamiliar people, sights and sounds. Common reactions to hospitalization are to become quiet and withdrawn or out of control and uncooperative. The Children’s Experiences team at Nicklaus Children's Hospital strives to normalize the hospital environment by providing psychosocial therapeutic support through family centered care with the goal of enriching the patient experience.

One of our Children’s Experience programs, Music Therapy, is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. It is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals.

After assessing the strengths and needs of each child, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, the children’s abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives.

At Nicklaus Children's Hospital, Musical Therapists work with patients and their care teams every day to help the children and their parents cope with anxiety, relieve pain and create positive interactions. Our Music Therapy program generates positive, therapeutic change that endures over time.

Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Research supports its effectiveness in many areas such as overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.

However, this program would not exist without the continuous support from organizations like Heather on Earth Music Foundation. They are a “first of its kind” non-profit organization created solely to provide funding for the implementation and subsequent ongoing support of music therapy programs in children’s hospitals in America and abroad.

Our program currently has three board-certified Music Therapists who use their talents to benefit both patients and their families by providing distraction, giving comfort, brightening moods, offering emotional expression, reducing anxiety, loneliness or isolation, and giving pure enjoyment. They are often assisted by music practicum and graduate students as well as volunteers.

Support of the Music Therapy Program at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital makes a difference in the lives of hundreds of young patients each year and touches the hearts of physicians, nurses and families, alike.

Please join Heather on Earth and our other music therapy donors and make a gift today to help support Music Therapy at Nicklaus Children's Hospital and help give our patients a better chance at life.
