Contribution will support young Hispanic adolescent girls through Nicklaus Children’s Healthy Chicas program

Miami Children’s Health Foundation recently announced that  AT&T awarded a grant of $25,000 to support their Nicklaus Children’s Healthy Chicas program. This interactive wellness program was developed by experts at Nicklaus Children’s for girls between the ages of 12 and 18 who are considered obese or have been identified as being at risk of obesity.

“We are so thankful to AT&T for funding the Healthy Chicas program to support the wellbeing of our teen patients,” said Lucy Morillo, president and CEO, Miami Children’s Health Foundation. “Their generous donation gives us the opportunity to come together for the children, giving them a chance to be healthier and happier."

The program aims at improving participants’ nutrition-related knowledge, such as reading labels and making healthier choices, and enabling them to sustain weight loss with family involvement and emphasis on lifestyle changes. Through Healthy Chicas, patients and their mothers attend 8, three-hour weekly sessions led by Nicklaus Children’s physicians from the Department of Adolescent medicine, nutritionists, dieticians and rehabilitation specialists.. “According to the Center for Disease control and prevention, the percentage of overweight children in the United States has doubled in the last 30 years” says Maria Johnston, AT&T Florida Regional Director “Our support of the Nicklaus Children’s Healthy Chicas program will help children from becoming overweight by providing them with the knowledge needed to make healthier choices that lead to a healthier lifestyle”
