Interim President & CEO
Mr. Birkenstock joined Miami Children’s Hospital in 2012 and has over 35 years of experience in healthcare finance. He has overall responsibility for the financial management of the Miami Children’s Health System.
Prior to joining Miami Children’s Hospital, Mr. Birkenstock served as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Children’s Hospital and Health System, Inc. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1991 to 2011. He served as Director of Financial Services of CHW from 1984 to 1990 and Director of Internal Audit from 1983 to 1984. Mr. Birkenstock has served on the Financial Services Advisory Council and the Research and Development Committee for Children’s Hospital Association (CHA).
He has served as President of the Milwaukee Chapter of Financial Executives International, associate clinical professor for The Medical College of Wisconsin, guest faculty at the University of Wisconsin and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and has lectured on numerous health care finance issues for many national groups and conferences. He is a past President and Board Member of the Wisconsin Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and also has served as its Treasurer, Secretary, and Vice President.
Mr. Birkenstock received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater in 1975. Mr. Birkenstock is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Richard Perez, CPA
Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Talent Management & Effectiveness
Richard joined MCH Foundation in 2003. He oversees finance, talent management/human resources, IT, legal, equipment and facilities. Richard received his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from Florida International University. Richard passed the CPA exam in the State of Georgia and worked as an auditor in Price Waterhouse’s Miami Office. In this position Richard worked on the audit of many private not-for-profit clients. Richard left Price Waterhouse to become the Chief Financial Officer for the Association for Retarded Citizens of South Florida and prior to joining MCH Foundation, was the Chief Financial Officer of the Miami-Dade/Monroe WAGES Coalition. Richard stays involved in the community by serving as a volunteer basketball and baseball coach for several youth leagues and remains committed to his alma mater by funding a yearly scholarship for accounting students at Florida International University.
Michael A. Mowatt
Interim Executive Director of Development & Major Gifts
Michael joined the MCH Foundation in 2009 and oversees Major Gifts and the Development Department Team, responsible for raising critical funds to meet the needs of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital as they continue to grow into a world class care organization. Michael has more than 25 years of non-profit development experience working with local non-profit health care organizations. Prior to joining MCH Foundation, he served as the Director of Founders and Member Services at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Michael is of Jamaican decent, born in Columbia, Maryland, and has been a resident of Miami since 1983. He maintains a strong connection with the community and is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children everywhere.
