Dr. Rafael Herrera & Family Donate $10 Million
to Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation
MIAMI – (Oct. XX, 2008) – Dr. Rafael Herrera and his family have donated $10 million to Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, the single largest gift to the Miami Children’s Hospital Research Institute. The donation was announced by Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation President Lucy Morillo and Dr. Narendra Kini, CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital.
"The Herrera Family has given the Hospital an amazing gift that will provide help to countless children here in our community and throughout the world," Morillo said. "We extend our profound gratitude to the entire family for this most generous act of giving."
The Herrera’s $10 million donation will be used to help fund essential clinical trials and studies at Miami Children’s Hospital Research Institute that further the Hospital’s mission to discover new treatments and medical breakthroughs in the field of pediatric care.
Family patriarch Dr. Rafael Herrera is the father of seven, including Raul Herrera, M.D., chief research officer at the Miami Children’s Hospital Research Institute.
"The members of my family and I have been truly inspired by the work of this wonderful research facility here in our own community," said Raul Herrera. "We welcome an opportunity to help provide the funding for discoveries that enable children of all cultures, no matter where they live, to benefit from the most advanced treatment and care available anywhere."
The elder Herrera, 82, is chairman and founder of Herrera Petroleum and holds the unique distinction of being part of the Dominican Energy Company that successfully explored for oil in the Dominican Republic. Herrera Petroleum is a global supplier of Petroleum Refined products with offices in The Philippines, Spain, Italy, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Miami, Dallas and Connecticut. The family has resided in South Florida since 1990.
Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation (MCHF) is a non-profit 501 (C) (3) organization whose sole mission is to create awareness and generate funds for Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH), the only licensed specialty hospital in South Florida exclusively for children. The Foundation’s guiding principle is that children’s health care is the primary concern of all and that children are precious like diamonds and thus must have access to state-of-the-art pediatric care. MCH, a 289-bed freestanding facility, is Florida’s only pediatric hospital to be included in U.S. News & World Report’s 2007 listing of "America’s Best Children's Hospitals."
