Genetic Disorder and Tracheostomy At the young age of 3, Mariana Isabel Acosta Simancas of Venezuela has had three surgeries at Miami Children’s Hospital, including a tracheostomy. Unfortunately, many children who undergo this procedure are unable to enjoy the beach, pool and many other activities.
Thanks to Miami Children’s Hospital’s VACC (Ventilation Assisted Children’s Center) Camp, founded by Dr. Moises Simpser, children like Mariana and their families have the opportunity to forget about their conditions. The camp offers technology and support that facilitate activities in which the children otherwise could not participate, due to disabilities.
Since 1986, VACC camp, the first of its kind, has hosted approximately 150 children representing more than 20 states and countries. The camp is free for the patients and their families thanks to donations from Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Mariana and her family hope to attend VACC Camp again next year.
Together we can make a difference in the life of a child today!
