Born Premature Kayla Fauerbach, 15, was born three months premature weighing only 2 pounds. Her lungs were not fully developed and she had intestinal problems. Baby Kayla was immediately transferred to Miami Children’s Hospital.
Unfortunately, during birth, her mother Liz developed a fever and was unable to leave the hospital where she delivered Kayla to join her newborn. Due to experience with her older son Tyler having been treated at Miami Children’s, Liz felt confident in the care Kayla would receive.
“When I called the hospital to see how Kayla was doing, I knew the nurse who picked up the phone,” Liz said. “Despite the many risks facing a child born two months premature, I knew my baby was in good hands.”
Kayla ultimately spent 91 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, undergoing emergency surgery to repair a perforated bowel when she was 18 days old. Today, Kayla is a healthy 15 year old, who enjoys writing and dancing.
