Open-Heart Surgery When Ilana Baiamonte was 2, she was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect, or a hole in the heart’s septal wall. Doctors told her parents there could be dire consequences if they did not opt for open-heart surgery.
After looking into cardiac surgery programs across the country, Ilana’s parents opted to go to Miami Children’s Hospital due to its reputation as a leader in cardiac care.
During the operation, doctors at Miami Children’s Hospital found multiple holes, but were still able to repair Ilana’s heart. She has been healthy since then and her heart is strong.
Ilana is now a healthy and active 15 year old who plays varsity high school basketball and enjoys going to Miami HEAT games and cheering on the team with her father Michael, who is the announcer.
