Knots of Hope (KOH) is a community service organization dedicated to raising vital funds to make a difference in the lives of children being treated at Miami Children’s Hospital (MCH). The organization focuses on spreading awareness on organ and tissue donation including those undergoing bone marrow transplants.
KOH was founded by Priscilla Suzal-Wright, an IB student at Coral Reef Senior High School and avid community service volunteer, joined by a group of loyal friends equally committed to serving the community.
Schools represented include: Miami Coral Reef Senior High, Southwest Miami Senior High, Terra
Environmental Research Institute Senior High School, John A. Ferguson Senior High and Miami Killian Senior High School. KOH has flourished with friends bonding while giving back to the community. By designing, producing, and selling colorful, fashionable and charming hand-made string beaded “knots of hope” bracelets, the girls have come together for a cause that is close to their hearts.
Making the KOH bracelets provides the MCH children a chance to have fun, to escape and to forget their own troubles. As membership continues to grow, the KOH volunteers entertain patients while providing them with the materials needed to create their own personal bead jewelry. This activity began with monthly playroom visits. Now KOH offers their services as part of MCH’s Bedside Buddies, a program dedicated to bring comfort, smiles and hope to patients unable to leave their room. We also participate in special holiday events at the West Kendall Rehab Center, host monthly celebrations, and provide ongoing activities to promote community awareness on the importance of bone marrow donation and transplantation as well as supporting the patients and families at Miami Children’s Hospital.
KOH has a special focus on bone marrow transplant patients and their families and are working toward serving this group by: planning a transplant survivors reunion; creating care packages for the parents upon arrival to the transplant unit; finding a comforting toy to provide to patients; and addressing other needs that may arise.
KOH enjoys a bright and hopeful vision, with optimism that their organization will grow and eventually evolve into a nationally recognized charity that will continue to make a major difference in children’s lives.
