Foundation founder Ambassador David M. Walters faced the tragic loss of his 6-year-old granddaughter Shannon Joy which changed the course of his life. His self-sacrifice and perseverance helped establish one of the nation’s top pediatric medical facilities, making it possible for children to receive world-class health care without leaving Florida.
With the support of expert physicians, a dedicated staff and a caring community, Ambassador Walters devoted his life to raising the funds necessary to expand, improve and support the medical facilities and programs at Miami Children’s Hospital until his retirement in 2002. Ambassador Walters continued his mission as a volunteer until his death in 2005.
Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation continues Ambassador Walters’ dream of supporting a world-class pediatric medical facility through its fundraising efforts.

The following types of commitments qualify you for membership in the Walters Legacy Society:
• Bequest provision in your will or trust
• Life-income gift that names the Foundation as a remainder beneficiary, such as a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity
• Charitable lead trust provides income to the Foundation for a term of years
• Gift or assignment of qualified retirement plan assets, such as an IRA, 401(k) or 403(b)
• Gift of life insurance and/or real estate
• Certain other planned gifts also may qualify for membership
